No one in the house knew when the little girl’s birthday was. They all tried thinking of days that would be suitable for Meg’s special day. Finally, after long discussions, Louie came up with the idea of celebrating her birthday on the day that the men found her on their doorstep. Fat Tony felt uncomfortable doing that; celebrating his little girl’s day on the night that her real parents abandoned her. When Johnny heard this he laughed; this would the perfect day to celebrate it because it would remind them all that garbage pickup now no longer comes on Tuesdays. And for that comment, both Legs and Louie knocked him senseless to the ground. For a few moments, Fat Tony thought of that idea. He didn’t want to remember of why her parents gave her up but that they were celebrating her presence and the happiness that she brought to this family. He agreed and from that conversation, Meg’s birthday was now celebrated on May 24th.
The day that Johnny finally made Meg cry, it was her birthday. Fat Tony and several of the other mobsters in the town of Springfield were outside decorating for the little girl’s birthday. Instead of being outside, playing with her family and friends, laughing and celebrating, she was inside her room, lying on her bed, huddled in a ball. While holding her favorite teddy tightly to her chest, tears streaming down her cheeks, the image of Johnny’s face replayed in her head over and over again. The look of disgust, the look of hatred he had in his facial expression, in his eyes. She began to cry harder, almost finding harder to breath now. She loved Johnny, almost as much as Legs. Meg remembered one time playing tag with her papa, Louie and Legs and she was running down the hall away from Louie. She could hear Louie laughing from behind her, as she ran into the living room, hiding behind the large brown sofa. When he found her, Louie would always give her a few seconds to run away again. They always did that for her. When she left the room, she ran down the long hall way and into the Billiard room. She stopped running and saw Johnny leaning against the pool table, smoking a cigar. Meg was always amazed with Johnny because he was tall and quiet; always serious, despite the fact that he never joined her or the other men in their merry games. For a few short seconds, she stood there, smiling at him. He didn’t seem to notice her and continued to smoke his cigar. Than, he looked over, saw the little brunette girl with pigtails in a baby blue dress, smiling at him and, for the first time, he smiled at her.
Meg smiled for a few seconds at the thought of Johnny smiling at her on that day. Then, she continued to cry into the pillow. By now, it was soaked with her tears. ‘Why couldn’t he be nice to be like that day’, she thought. ‘I love him, why doesn’t he love me’? Down the hall, Legs and Louie were both looking into each door, trying to find Meg. When Legs would open up the door, the two men would peer in. When there was no sign of the little girl, they would close the door and continue their search.
“Maybe she’s in her room Louie,” said Legs, heading that direction.
As they were heading towards her room, they suddenly heard heavy sobs coming from the room. Both of them looked at each other, as Louie opened the door. There, still lying on her bed, now covering her face with the pillow, was Meg. Shocked, the men rushed to her side. Legs quickly picked up the little girl and held her close to his chest.
“Sweetie, what happened,” asked Legs, still in shock.
Wiping her eyes, Meg looked up into Legs’ eyes.
“Johnny…Johnny…he…he…”
Before she could cry, Louie took a hit at the wall with his fist. While in his lap, the little girl jumped.
“I knew it! That guy doesn’t know when to quite, does he? Well, I’m gonna go over there and show him something to cry about!”
Before he could leave, Legs stopped him.
“Louie, don’t. I want to do harm to that just as much as you do. He’s done nothing but hurt her. I think you should go get Fat Tony, so he can deal with this.”
Legs could see in Louie’s eyes that he didn’t like the idea but he left the room and did it anyway. While Louie headed towards the yard, Legs tended to Meg’s side. She was quiet; tears still streaming down her eyes, as she tightly clung onto his jacket. Legs hated seeing her this way. As he stroked her hair, he began gently began to rock her. He kissed her on the forehead and tried looking into her eyes but she wasn’t looking at him. Legs sighed, and continued stroking her hair.
“Johnny…He, doesn’t mean to do these things to you, Meg.”
“Then why is he so mean to me, Legs? I didn’t do anything to him.”
“Well, sometimes people don’t know how to take someone new. It’s like this-say a couple has a new baby and brings it home and they already have a child. That child is going to get jealous because of all of the attention, the love it’s getting. Johnny just doesn’t know how to interact with you yet.”
“But I want to play with Johnny. I love him just as much as you or Louie.”
Legs sighed. He knew that; they all knew that but Johnny felt differently towards the little girl.
“I know you do sweetie but sometimes it takes a person a really long time to get to know someone. Maybe a day, a week, a month, or in Johnny’s case, a really long time. Understand?”
Meg looked up at Legs and tried to smile but she had a hard time doing that knowing someone she loved didn’t love her back.
“I just want him to love me, Legs.”
Legs smiled and continued stroking her hair.
“I know you do and he will. Just give him some more time.”

Outside, Louie tried to find Fat Tony. The yard was covered with part streamers, pink balloons and numerous tables with mountains of presents. There were several men and woman here from Springfield who worked for Don, were evolved with Fat Tony in some way or worked with another higher power. Attending the party were the Moretti mob from the lower part of Springfield, who in Fat Tony’s case, couldn’t whack a guy even if they were right in front of them, the Rossi family, who were second feared next to the D’Amico family, Romano family who did all the smuggling in Springfield and the Greco family, who in Louie and Legs’ words, just completely sucked. One time, when the D’Amico and Greco boys got together to take care of a group of men that didn’t pay in time, the Greco boys forgot to load their guns, let one of the men get away and had the cops follow them for the first couple of minutes after they let the abandoned warehouse. Fat Tony swore he would never do business with them again and he never did. But recently, one of the boys had a daughter around the time Fat Tony found Meg, so it would only be wise to invite them to her party. Louie finally found Fat Tony drinking wine and smoking a cigar with the boss of the Moretti family and the Romano family. He quietly walked up behind and be whispering to Fat Tony. The two men looked at Louie and noticed Fat Tony’s face become full of rage in an instant. He threw his glass across the yard and it finally landed at the feet of one of the Rossi boys. He quickly adjusted his jacket and excused himself from the men. Walking towards the door, he began smoking the cigar excessively and quickly.
“When? When did he do this to her, Louie,” he asked, while exhaling the smoke.
“I think it was today. Legs and I found her in her room crying on the bed. When we found out it was Johnny…”
Fat Tony pushed Louie aside and stormed into the room. Louie stopped and watched his boss head up the stairs and towards the little girl’s room.

Still inside her room, trying to comfort the little girl, Legs continued to rock Meg and gently stroke her hair. By now, he figured she would have stopped crying but she never did. Her sobs were no longer heavy but when he looked down to see if she was still crying, indeed she was. For every minute he was there holding that crying little girl, he hated Johnny even more. Johnny was no longer a human being in his eyes but a cruel monster that would make a child that only wanted love and kindness in return, cry and hurt the way he made Meg. Finally, Fat Tony opened that door and found Legs holding his daughter. She didn’t even look up but continued to look at the floor, tears slowly streaming down her face. He sighed, and closed the door halfway. He took a seat next to Legs and reached out his arms for his daughter. Legs handed Meg over to Fat Tony, got up and walked over to Meg. He gently ruffled her hair and tried to smile at her.
“Your papa is gonna talk to ya, ok sweetie? Don’t let this get to you.”
As Legs left the room, he slowly closed the door behind him. He was greeted by Louie at the end of it.
“Fat Tony in there,” he asked, pointing to the door.
Legs just nodded and silently walked down the hall, towards the stairs and disappeared towards the party down below.

Inside her room, Fat Tony placed his daughter on his knee and smiled. Meg continued to look at the floor. She didn’t want to look at him. This was the worse day ever. He noticed one of her pigtails where coming loose, so he began to fix it. As he tightened it, he tried to find the words to comfort her.
“You look so pretty, my little è aumentato con le spine.”
“Johnny doesn’t think so. Johnny doesn’t even like me…”
As Fat Tony fixed the other, he continued to smile, hoping his daughter would look up at him.
“Don’t worry about Johnny. He just doesn’t understand how special you really are. When people don’t understand, they attend to attack.”
“But why papa? I want Johnny to understand me! I want him to play with me, and tell me I’m pretty and…and…”
“I know you do, Meg but Johnny has always been this way. He doesn’t take well to something new and it usually takes him awhile to adjust to something. It’s just how he is-you can’t change someone. THEY have to change. I think you should give him some time. That’s all you can do when it comes to him.”
“How long do you think it will take? Legs told me it might take awhile.”
Fat Tony smiled. Meg finally looked up at her father. As she did, he gently wiped away some of the tears around her cheeks. He then gave them a quick little pinch.
“Awhile? Well, than if it’s gonna be that long, then so be it. But until then, you have Legs, Louie and even me to play with if you need it. Just do me a favor and stay clear from him, ok my little è aumentato con le spine?”
Meg gave a big grin, jumped up and gave her father a big hug. In return, Fat Tony did the same thing. Then, both of them got up from her bed and head out from the door.
“Now, I think it’s time that someone celebrates her birthday. Everybody is her and they can’t wait to see you.”
Hand in hand, Fat Tony and Meg walked down the stairs and out into the party.
